This is a destination for approximately 1 million pilgrims from Poland. The Jasna Góra Monastery is not only a place of pilgrimage for Catholic and Orthodox churches, but also one of the most important Polish military fortresses.

What should I know about?

The Jasna Góra Monastery the biggest and the most popular shrine to the Virgin Mary.

The Monastery is visited by nearly 4 million of tourists from around the world every year. Every year approximately 1 million Poles go in more than 200 pilgrim groups to visit Jasna Góra.

The Jasna Góra Monastery is famous for the icon of the Virgin Mary, depicting the Mother of God with the Christ Child. The icon is known as the Black Madonna of Częstochowa or Our Lady of Częstochowa. The icon was created about 66 AD, and it has been in the Jasna Gora Monastery since 1382. During this time the monastery was plundered and vandalised, but the holy icon luckily survived in good condition until today. The Black Madonna icon is widely venerated by Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians and it is credited with many miracles. The icon is the most recognisable Christian symbol in Poland and in the world.

A frequent visitor to worship the Black Madonna icon was John Paul II. The Polish Pope had visited the monastery six times. In 1991 the icon was venerated by John Paul II and participants of the World Youth Day. There is a John Paul II statue on the area of the monastery since 1999.

The sanctuary is mostly recognized for being a place of worship of Our Lady of Częstochowa, but this is also a place with a really interesting history. It was established in the XIV century and it was steadily expanded since then. It had soon became a military fortress, which effectively defended Częstochowa’s treasures and Polish kings. The monastery was the unconquered fortress in many local skirmishes and raids.
